Program 201 - Operational Management
Program 201 Operational Management
Program
Meets Once A Week
4 Instruction Modules Will Be Covered In 12 Three
Hour Sessions
1. Operations Strategy
This module is intended for
participants with a strong interest in understanding operations-in
either manufacturing or service industries-and the role operations can
play in business strategy and competitive advantage. Because the module
has a strong managerial focus (assessing a situation, taking effective
action, getting things done), it will also be of value to all
participants with an interest in general management. It will be
particularly valuable for those who see their careers including an
assignment in operations over the coming decade, or who see themselves
consulting in operations for client businesses.
2. Cost Measurement and Management
Almost all firms are
engaged in productivity enhancement and cost control/cost reduction
initiatives. This segment provides the tools and techniques for
successfully implementing such initiatives. The tools include designing
and using measurement systems and incentive systems.
3. Designing, Managing and Improving Operations
This
module is intended for participants who expect or consult for
operations of any sort over the course of their careers. Such careers
include those in manufacturing, management consulting, and the service
industries. The focus of the module is on detailing the tools,
techniques, and frameworks necessary to design, manage, and improve
operations in a broad range of industries, and on providing critical
knowledge to prepare participants to take effective action early in
their careers.
4. Coordinating and Managing Supply Chains
The production
and delivery of products and services requires the coordination of
tasks performed by various individuals and departments. Increasingly,
the tasks needing to be coordinated are located in different firms,
different functions, and different countries. Coordinating these
activities requires planning operations (manufacturing, transportation,
etc.) and inventory, timely information transfer, and the management of
incentives, contracts and cultural differences. The module first covers
operational coordination within a firm and expands to include
inter-functional, inter-firm, and inter-national coordination. The
module finishes with a discussion of the role of supply chain
intermediaries.
